Resin or Filament? Choosing the Right 3D Printing Technology

Resin gives you detail that filament cannot approach; filament gives you size, strength and a far simpler process. They are not competing versions of the same machine — they fail at different things, and the right choice follows from what you print rather than from which is ‘better’.

How they actually differ

A filament printer (FDM) melts plastic and draws your object one layer at a time, like a very precise glue gun. A resin printer (MSLA) shines a masked UV image into a vat of liquid resin, curing an entire layer at once.

That difference drives everything else. Because resin cures a whole layer simultaneously, printing ten copies takes almost exactly as long as printing one — the layer count is the same. On a filament printer, ten copies takes roughly ten times as long.

Where resin wins

  • Fine detail. Miniatures, jewellery masters, dental models, scale parts. Resin resolves features a nozzle physically cannot draw.
  • Smooth surfaces. Layer lines are far less visible, so parts need much less finishing before painting.
  • Batch production of small items. Fill the plate and the time barely changes.

Where filament wins

  • Size. Filament build volumes are larger and cheaper to scale up.
  • Toughness. Standard resins are comparatively brittle. A functional bracket that must flex or take a knock wants PETG, not resin.
  • Process simplicity. A filament print comes off the plate finished. A resin print does not — see below.
  • Material range. Flexible, filled, high-temperature and engineering filaments are all readily available.

The post-processing nobody warns you about

This is the single biggest surprise for people moving to resin, and it is worth knowing before you buy rather than after.

A resin print emerges coated in sticky uncured resin. It then needs:

  1. Washing in isopropyl alcohol to remove the surface resin.
  2. Drying.
  3. Curing under UV light to reach final hardness.
  4. Support removal, which on resin prints is more extensive than on filament.

That is fifteen to thirty minutes of handling per batch, it uses alcohol as a consumable, and it involves handling a material you should not get on your skin. None of it is difficult — but if you imagined pressing print and collecting a finished object, resin will disappoint you.

Safety, honestly

Liquid resin is an irritant and a sensitiser. Treat it properly and it is entirely manageable; treat it casually and you can develop a lasting sensitivity that ends your resin printing altogether.

The rules are simple: nitrile gloves every time, ventilation, eye protection when pouring, and never pour uncured resin down a drain — cure the waste solid under UV first, then dispose of it as solid plastic.

Sensitisation is the specific risk worth understanding. It is cumulative: repeated small skin contacts build a reaction over months. People who skip gloves ‘just this once’ are not gambling on that print — they are gambling on being able to use resin next year.

Running costs compared

Filament is straightforward: the spool is the consumable, and the slicer tells you the grams before you print.

Resin has more lines: the resin itself, isopropyl alcohol for washing, gloves, and the FEP film in the vat, which is a wear item that needs replacing periodically. Per part, resin generally costs more.

In Egyptian conditions, add one more consideration: both materials dislike heat and humidity, but resin also dislikes light. Store it in its opaque bottle, away from windows — resin left in sunlight cures in the bottle and is then waste.
