Resin printing is entirely safe with a routine, and genuinely risky without one. The hazard is not dramatic — nothing catches fire — it is cumulative skin sensitisation, which builds quietly over months of small contacts and then ends your resin printing permanently. This is the routine that prevents it.
The four rules
- Nitrile gloves, every single time. Not latex — resin permeates it. Change them when they get resin on the outside, and take them off before touching your phone or a door handle.
- Ventilation. A window and airflow at minimum. Resin vapour is an irritant, and an enclosed room with no air movement concentrates it.
- Eye protection when pouring. Pouring and shaking are when splashes happen.
- Never pour liquid resin down a drain. Cure the waste solid first, then bin it as solid plastic.
Why sensitisation is the risk that matters
Most people worry about a single bad exposure. The realistic risk is the opposite: dozens of trivial contacts, none of which hurt at the time.
Repeated skin contact with uncured resin can produce an allergic sensitisation. Once developed it does not go away, and it can become severe enough that being in the same room as an open vat causes a reaction. People who develop it usually cannot go back to resin printing at all.
The gloves are not there to protect you from today’s print. They are there so you can still be printing in five years.
The washing and curing routine
A finished print is covered in uncured resin and is not safe to handle bare-handed until it has been washed and cured.
Washing
Isopropyl alcohol dissolves uncured resin. Two containers work far better than one: a first bath that takes off the bulk, and a second, cleaner bath for the final rinse. Without the second, you are effectively rinsing in dilute resin and leaving a tacky film.
The alcohol becomes saturated over time. When it stops cleaning properly, leave the container in sunlight — the dissolved resin cures and settles, and the alcohol above can be decanted and reused. That is worth doing here, where isopropyl is not always cheap or convenient to replace.
Curing
UV light brings the print to full hardness. A curing station is convenient and controlled; direct sunlight also works and Egypt has no shortage of it.
Two cautions with sunlight. First, it is much stronger than a curing lamp, so over-curing is easy — an over-cured print becomes brittle and can develop surface cracks. Minutes, not hours. Second, heat: a dark print in full summer sun gets hot enough to deform while it cures. Cure in indirect bright light rather than on a hot surface at midday.
Storage in Egyptian conditions
- Keep resin in its opaque bottle, away from any window. Ambient light cures it slowly in the bottle, and once thickened it is waste.
- Keep it cool. Heat shortens shelf life. A cupboard away from an external wall beats a shelf in the sun.
- Do not leave resin in the vat between sessions if you print infrequently. Filter it back into the bottle — the filter catches cured fragments that would otherwise ruin the next print and damage the FEP film.
- Resin thickens when cold. Rare here, but if a print fails inexplicably after a cool night, temperature is a likely cause.
Waste disposal, done properly
Everything that has touched uncured resin is resin waste: failed prints, supports, paper towels, used gloves, the sludge at the bottom of the wash container.
The disposal method is the same for all of it — cure it solid first. Spread it out, leave it in UV or sunlight until fully hard, and it becomes ordinary solid plastic that can go in the bin. Uncured resin in a drain or a bin is a genuine environmental problem and completely avoidable.
The FEP film
The clear film at the bottom of the vat is a consumable, not a permanent part. It clouds and stretches with use, and a punctured one leaks resin into the machine — an expensive and unpleasant repair.
Inspect it regularly, and always filter the resin after a failed print: a cured fragment left sitting on the film is exactly what punctures it on the next job.
A workable weekly routine
- Before printing — gloves on, ventilation open, vat checked for debris.
- After printing — wash in two baths, cure, remove supports.
- End of session — filter resin back to the bottle if you will not print again soon, wipe the machine, cure all waste solid.
- Periodically — inspect the FEP, decant the settled alcohol, check resin storage.
None of it is onerous once it is habit, and it is the difference between resin printing being a pleasure and being a problem.
